The Most Iconic Movie Dresses of All Time

Posted on

When you think of your favourite film, it’s impossible to picture the characters without their costume. We are looking back at the most iconic dresses to grace the big screen, often being just as memorable as the film itself. We hope we’ve included your all-time favourite!

Film: Pretty Woman
Character: Vivian Ward
Played By: Julia Roberts
Julia Robert’s fiery red gown in Pretty Woman made not only Edward fall in love with her, but we all did too! The gorgeously draped, shoulder revealing dress was head to toe glam. Let’s not forget the iconic jewellery box scene this dress was featured in.

Film: Atonement
Character: Cecilia Tallis
Played By: Keira Knightley
The emerald floor sweeping 40s evening gown has been voted one of the ‘Best Costumes of All Time’ by Sky Movies. The stunning dress was requested by the director who wanted to allude to jealousy and temptation. We couldn’t think of a more perfect dress to convey these themes.

Film: The Sex and the City Movie
Character: Carrie Bradshaw
Played By: Sarah Jessica Parker
Even though we were devastated over Mr. Big leaving Carrie at the altar, we can’t deny how amazing this wedding dress looked. The over-the-top Vivienne Westwood design sold out within hours after the premiere of the film.

Film: Clueless
Character: Cher
Played By: Alicia Silverstone
Okay, let’s talk about clueless, is there another movie that ignites our love and nostalgia for 90s fashion. It’s hard to choose just one single outfit from Clueless from the yellow checked suit, matching gym wear to her date night dress. We can’t go past the little red dress that she gets held up at gunpoint. "You don't understand," she says when the gunman asks her to lie on the ground. "This is an Alaïa."

Film: Pretty in Pink
Character:
Andie
Played By: Mollie Ringwald
Molly Ringwald’s cut up creation in Pretty in Pink is definitely a dress from the times. The bright pink lace and polka dot ensemble perfectly represents Andie’s fashion-forward style combining a dress of her mother’s with her best friends and creating her own prom dress. Even though the dress isn’t a classic, we can’t help but love Andie’s quirky style.

Film: Beauty & the Beast
Character: Belle
Played By: Emma Watson
We all knew Belle’s yellow dress from the original Disney cartoon. But we didn’t fall in love with it until Emma’s Watson’s dress in the 2017 live-action adaptation came to life. The modern adaptation. It took the costume team a total of 12,000 hours in creation time for this iconic fairy-tale look to come to life.

Film: Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Character:
Holly Golightly
Played By: Audrey Hepburn
Do you even need an explanation? The black dress worn by Audrey as she finishes her croissant outside of Tiffany’s is one of the most iconic dresses of all time. The black Givenchy dress pioneered our love for the little black dress.

Film: The Seven Year Itch
Character: The Girl
Played By: Marilyn Monroe
There probably a more memorable dress I history than the flowy white dress worn by Marilyn in The Seven Year Itch. The white halter dress continues to be worn by impersonators today.
